in case anyone was wondering what I’ve been doing, here’s a corner of the tentatively-named “Fire In The Head” WIP

Apart from working on that, I’ve mostly just been teaching and being sick (bloody back-to-back sinus infections/headcolds/whatever – enough already!) and dealing with a sick preschooler (bronchitis, on the mend now thank goodness). I also did a massive purge for a rental inspection, including cupboard-emptying and furniture-moving and wall-washing and a couple of runs to the salvos and so on, and the house actually remained tidy … for a whole week or so afterwards …
Got a niggling feeling I was doing something else of passing interest too, but sod if I can remember what … oh, duh. Labels & sleeves etc for the NSW guild show quilts, and getting them off. I finally remembered to put the reins on the poor old carousel horse, before I packed it off.
I would have uploaded a photo of Virginia’s hanging, completed this Monday gone, but all the pics I took that day are blurry with off colours. She’s having it framed behind glass, so hopefully I can con the framer into giving me a bell once it’s stretched but before the glass goes in so I can try for a decent shot.
Apparently I got a mention in a new trade-only publication that had its debut at the recent trade show in Sydney. They were going to contact me about a write-up for a future issue, so maybe the mention was of the “in the next issue” variety? In any case … woot! Oh, and Buffy from the ANZ artquilty list contacted me to say a small committee included “Ellanora Bellaflora” in the group of journal quilts requested by DUQ for an upcoming article. No guarantee of publication, but I’m well chuffed anyway. And did I mention that a local woman wants to commission a site-specific work? I need to go see her (& the relevent space) soon actually. This minor surge of interest or possibilities or whatever = lots of woot and a helping of eek.

I’m such a dork sometimes. Truly, I need a keeper. I’ve been knocking myself out for the last week trying to get a piece done (as in designed, started, let alone finished) for a DUQ comp, stressing about whether I’ll have enough time to do it AND get ready for the annual rental inspection. So I’m talking to mum on the phone about how I’m going, and she asks if I doublechecked the due date to make sure it’ll make it if I post on Monday, and after vainly trying to track down the magazine or the photocopy Judy gave me before she bought me the actual mag (she REALLY wants me to enter – this is all your fault, Judy!), I finally find the website … and the “read more” link is some kind of broken & keeps reloading the main page ARGH … okay try the editor’s blog … aha! Victory! Okay, if I send it early enough Monday it should just make it by the 13th … erm … of July?
another prowl through the house, find the photocopy rolled up with some of the sketches I made last week, and confirmation: due by July 13. It’s official, I am an idiot.
While I wait for mum to stop laughing at me, I think about what I need to do after we hang up. First on the list is to ring the NSW guild’s exhibition organiser to talk about the sleeve on the carousel horse*, so I’ll need to find the phone … um …
Note to stupid body: vague idiocy & forgetfulness is not an effective response to stress, k? Snap out of it!
On the upside, I guess thinking the deadline was LOOMING booted my muse up the bum and got me started a month early, so all’s well etc. And so far I like it – I wasn’t at all happy with the one I started painting on silk, so I’ve gone back to fusibles and fabrics and pens. I’m trialling the liquid fuse moMIL sent me, and will probably use the 606 too. I’m using trusty old vliesofix for the circle segments, because some of its “negative” qualities can work in your favour when you want precision.
On the downside, now I have no excuse to avoid horrible & very necessary housework. Sigh.
* aw crap, I also need to do proper labels for both. You know, I don’t think I’ve ever put a proper label on a quilt yet …
